Memorial Day True Meaning.
Monday is Memorial Day, the unofficial kick-off of summer. As many of us prepare to use the three-day weekend to take a road trip, enjoy an outdoor barbecue or just chill and enjoy the fact that we have an extra day off that week, we should also stop and consider the deeper and true meaning of
Memorial Day.
According to USMemorialDay.org, Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, and it was set aside to remember the sacrifice of those who died in the service of the United States of America. Another source claims that the official beginning of Memorial Day was declared by President Lyndon B. Johnson in May 1966 in Waterloo, New York. However, Memorial Day was declared an official federal holiday in the National Holiday Act of 1971 to ensure a three-day weekend for a federal holiday.
Regardless of what it means to you, we cannot avoid the fact that United States citizens died with the purpose of defending our freedom firmly in mind.
So while you enjoy the day off, take a few minutes to think about the people who have died to protect our way of life.
